Simplicity, honesty and functionality are the hallmarks of the Shaker philosophy and aesthetic. The strong convictions of the Shakers are reflected in the rigour of their furniture with essential lines.

They appreciated quality materials, skill, sobriety and balance. Fleeing persecution in England and France, the faithful of this Protestant religious movement found refuge in America at the end of the 18th century.

They became famous in the design world for their unembellished 19th-century furniture. This pared down style, which served their monastic way of life, made them precursors of 20th-century functionalism. Since the 1940s-50s, Shaker furniture has attracted the attention of many collectors and design enthusiasts.
